Sunderland Community Church belongs to an international network of churches called Salt & Light. This network has a vision to plant churches throughout the UK. The North East region began to seek the Lord about where in particular He might ask them to send a new Church plant. The Lord spoke clearly about planting churches along the three main rivers in the North East, the Tyne, the Tees and the Wear.
In 2013, the North East team announced that the next church plant to be sent would be to Sunderland, and over the course of that year, a team began to form and in the following year, began to relocate.
The couple leading the team had been involved with the Eden Network and had a heart to continue to serve those in more urban areas. Through this desire to serve, a relationship began to form with a Methodist Church who were crying out for an Eden project in their area, but lacked the volunteers to make it happen. As the team were relocating, they decided to invest in the area surrounding this methodist church, and an Eden Team was formed.
The new Church plant held their first meeting in St Andrews Methodist Church, Southwick, on Sunday 19th October 2014 and have continued to meet there ever since.
